Is it Time to Replace Your Car’s Transmission Fluid?

Transmission fluid does a lot of heavy lifting for your car’s transmission, so it needs to be able to handle the job. There might be some signs that your car’s transmission needs fresh fluid, so it’s important to be able to recognize those signs. Here’s what Skiles Automotive Services wants you to know.

Unresponsive Transmission

When you drive your car, you expect that everything is going to function properly, right? With the transmission, you press the gas and expect that the transmission is going to take the power created by the engine and use that to move the car forward. If the transmission fluid needs replacing, you may end up with a situation where you press the gas and not much else happens. That’s frustrating and it can be dangerous.

Rough Shifting

Another possible issue happens when the transmission feels like it isn’t catching the gears properly. It might even be jolting when it does change gears. That’s called rough shifting and it can be a result of the transmission fluid not being able to keep up with the demands of the transmission. This often happens when the fluid is old or dirty.

Noisy Transmission

If the transmission isn’t getting what it needs in terms of lubrication and cooling, it’s also likely to make some new noises as it operates. Some of the most common noises include grinding sounds, clunking noises, and even occasional squealing sounds. Any new sounds mean that something new has happened, and you need to get the transmission checked as soon as possible.

Fluid Leak

If you’re ever seeing transmission fluid under the car, that’s a big sign that you need to get the transmission inspected. Even a small transmission fluid leak is something that needs to be addressed. That’s because your transmission needs literally every drop of transmission fluid in order to be properly lubricated and protected from the damage that could be inflicted on the internal parts if it weren’t fully lubricated. Transmission fluid leaks are usually under the back end of the car, so it’s easy to notice them for what they are.
