Your car’s transmission is a crucial system that keeps your car moving. It’s made up of an amazing amount of parts that all work together like a well-oiled system. Until it doesn’t. Skiles Automotive wants you to be aware of these signs of transmission trouble.
You Smell Something Burning
Hot transmission fluid is not a pretty smell. And if you’re smelling it at all, that means that you probably have got a transmission fluid leak somewhere and that’s not good news. The problem could also be that your transmission is low on fluid, which is also not good news.
There’s a Transmission Fluid Leak
Even if you’re not smelling hot transmission fluid, you could have a leak. Transmission fluid doesn’t leak under the engine compartment, though. You’ll spot a puddle of transmission fluid closer to the rear of your car and it should be reddish-brown and greasy. If the fluid is really old or the transmission is in worse shape than you thought, the fluid might be dark brown or black.
You’re Hearing Clunking or Grinding Sounds
Your transmission should be fairly quiet when it’s doing its job properly. If you’re hearing a lot more noise than usual, specifically from behind you, that’s a sign that your transmission is having some issues. You might hear more noise as the transmission is trying to shift from one gear into another.
You’re Not Feeling a Response from the Transmission
When you press the gas to accelerate, you expect a response from your car. You might hear your car’s engine rev, but not feel any sort of forward movement or response. Or that response might be a lot slower than usual. These are all signs that you need to have your transmission checked as soon as possible.
Your Car’s Check Engine Light Comes On
No one wants to see their car’s check engine light come on. It’s a scary sight. But the problem could actually be in your transmission, especially if you’re seeing some of these other signs at the same time. The issues with your transmission can eventually affect the engine, so this is worth having resolved sooner rather than later.
