Keeping your car running at its best means keeping it in tires as needed, too. But how can you tell you need new tires? Skiles Automotive Services has these tips for you.
The Car Vibrates While You Drive
Vibrations, as you’re driving, are a sign that there’s something going on somewhere. Depending on when you feel that vibration, you can narrow down the possible cause. In the case of your car’s tires, vibrations are likely to increase as your car’s speed increases. The culprit can also be something in the suspension, but it’s a good idea to check out the tires first.
The Tires Aren’t in Great Shape
Have you looked at your tires lately? If not, you really should, for multiple reasons. First, look at how weathered the tires seem to be. As the rubber ages, it tends to fade to a gray color. You might also see some scuffs on the sidewalls. The tread is another important factor. If you’re noticing that the tread is extremely worn or seems to be wearing unevenly, that’s something that needs to be addressed. All of this is even more of a concern if your tires are older than about three or four years old.
The Tires Are Damaged
Something else to look at is whether there’s actual damage anywhere on the tires. This weakens the tires and might be a sign of premature tire aging. Some of what you should look for include excessive scuffing on the sidewalls, blisters anywhere on the tire, or chunks of tire tread that seem to have been torn away. Any damage can mean that your tires need to be replaced, regardless of their age.
You’re Having to Put Air in the Tires Often
How often are you having to put air in your car’s tires? If that’s happening more often than every few weeks or so, that could be a sign that your tires have more damage than you think. Tire pressure isn’t a constant thing, so it does need to be manually adjusted now and then. Don’t just rely on the car’s internal pressure monitoring system, though. That can be wrong, and it’s best to have an idea what the pressure actually is.
